We’re incredibly excited to announce our latest collaboration with fellow ocean lovers, Henri Lloyd. Together, we’ve stopped over 1 MILLION plastic bottles in weight from entering our ocean, while supporting plastic collectors living in coastal communities such as Haiti, Indonesia, Philippines, Brazil and Egypt. To celebrate our partnership, we chatted to Dan Williams - Brand Director at Henri Lloyd to get some of the inside scoop. Read on to find out more...
Where is your favourite place to go sailing?
My hometown of Abersoch, North Wales. It's a beautiful part of the world and on a sunny day I think you would be hard pressed to find anywhere better.
You’ve recently partnered with Clean Sailors, a non-profit on a mission to set a new standard of cleaner sailing within the global sailing community, can you tell us a bit more about the work you’re doing together?
We are currently partnering by supporting their podcast, which is all about the sea and what we can do to help keep it clean. Founder Holly has also been over in the Azores throughout August, looking at the microplastic content within the waters, to help us understand the plastic soup upon which we sail.
Has there been a noticeable shift for you guys when out in the water in terms of plastic pollution and its impact?
Having spent my childhood growing up by the coast in N.Wales it's more apparent now than ever the amount of plastic that's in our waters and on the beaches. It's growing year on year and having spent a few weeks there this summer with family, it's apparent that there is still a a huge amount that needs to be done to shift the dial.
We absolutely love your Blue August campaign - can you tell us a little bit more about it?
We created Blue August to put a spotlight on the amount of plastic that is dumped into our oceans every year, where it's estimated that by 2025 there will be more plastic by weight than fish, which is a frightening thought. We wanted to help give back by donating 10% of our profits from the month towards Pioneers that are helping clean up our oceans. We did a similar thing last year with our Blue Friday day, where we campaigned against Black Friday and encouraged people to buy less but better.
What is your top tip on what a sailor can do to minimise their plastic consumption when out at sea?
- Invest in reusables and quit single use.
- Ensure we pick up and clean up our beaches and marinas to keep it away from the sea.
- Do not throw anything overboard.
