Before the Tide

Before the tide

We fight for the ocean that made us, one tide at a time.

We spent time on the coast of British Columbia with people who moved there for the water and stayed for good. What they showed us is the idea Ocean Bottle was built on.

The longer they spend in the water, the more they look after it. This coast is full
proof of that. The whales are back in Howe Sound, following the herring home.
Ocean Bottle started from the same place, out of love for the ocean and a grudge against plastic. Every bottle sold pays to collect a thousand plastic bottles
before they reach the sea.

Buying one means joining the people who are up before the tide.

It's a fight, and we rather enjoy it.

Ali, oceanographer

The first ocean Ali ever saw was on television,
in a documentary about jellyfish, and it hooked her.
Visits to family in eastern Quebec brought the real thing closer, encountering her first whale there.

Years later, an internship on marine mammals and salmon took her to Vancouver Island. She went to have a look at Ucluelet and ended up moving there.

“I've always been very curious and wanted to know more.”

Addison, skipper

Addison grew up in Ontario, a curious boy, always happiest when his parents let him loose on the lake. Boats came first and the sea came later.

Now he takes campers up the Sound and drops them on beaches that they'll have to themselves, picking them up afterwards  with fulfillment. He admits he says the word freedom a lot.

“You have to respect what the ocean can deliver. Because it doesn't play.”

Heike, oyster farmer

At the age of twenty-nine Heike was planning a long spell abroad. Then the farm she runs today came up for sale at a price too good to miss, and she decided to go for it. Wondering if she was up to the job, it turns out the hydraulics do the heavy lifting, while she reads the weather. Four seasons on, she's the only woman she knows that runs a farm on her own in Clayoquot Sound.

“It gives me access to that unlimited feeling… Like I can do anything.”
